Her insan çocukluğunda olsun, gençliğinde olsun, olgunluğunda olsun, yaşlılığında olsun bir köprüden geçmiştir ve bir köprüye ait bir hatırası vardır. Köprü, insanın engelleri aşmak, tabiat kuvvetlerini yenmek, toplulukları bağlamak, düşünceyi yaymak için giriştiği çabanın bir ifadesidir; öyle ki köprülerin öyküsünü anlatmak demek, hem medeniyetin tarihine, hem de kişi olarak insanın davranışına eğilmek demektir. Toplumların gelişmesinin dokusu inançları için çarpışanlar, akımların gidişlerini değiştirenler ve karşı tarafa geçip başarılarını kabul ettirenlerle doludur. Bütün bu kişiler maddi olsun, manevi olsun bir köprü kurmuşlar, ya da başkalarının yarattıkları köprüden geçmişlerdir. İşte bu kitapta "köprü" denilen mühendislik ve sanat yapısına bir medeniyet unsuru olarak yöneldiğim gibi, kelimenin anlattığı düşünceyi de bir araştırma konusu yaptım. Bu kitap beş yıla yakın bir çalışmanın ürünüdür. Bu süre içinde pek çok seyahat etmek imkânını buldum, gezdiğim her yerde köprüleri yakından inceledim, eski ya da yeni bilgileri topladım, resim çektim, dört kıtanın insanlarıyla görüştüm, müzelerde, kütüphanelerde incelemeler yaptım, eski kitapçılardan tarihsel belgeler buldum. Çeşitli ülkelerde yayınlanmış köprü ile ilgili edebi, siyasi, sosyal, teknik kitapları okumakla kalmayıp bu eserlerin içindeki bilgileri karşılaştırarak sıraladım. Folklor, halk efsaneleri, gazete ile dergilerin makale ve haberleri de bilgi kaynakları arasına girdi. Ayrıca sanat, edebiyat, teknoloji ve politika alanında köprü ile ilişkisi olan kişilerin yaşantılarına eğildim; bu kişilerin bir köprünün yapımı ya da varlığı ile bağlılığını değerlendirmek yoluna gittim. Köprü istediği kadar olağan, eski ya da yeni olsun, insan istediği kadar olağanüstü, ünlü ya da büyük olsun, bu ikisi arasında sosyal ya da psikolojik açıdan bir yaşantı düzeni, bir ilişki olduğunu gözledim…

In the first weeks of August, 1914, the German Battle cruiser, Goeben, and her accompanying light cruiser, Breslau, escaped the clutches of the pursuing British Mediterranean Squadron and took refuge at Constantinople, where they would later exert a decisive influence upon Turkey's attempts to remain out of the war. Various accounts of the escape have sought to apportion blame, with the Admiralty (under Winston Churchill), the Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean, and the Rear-Admiral, First Cruiser Squadron, all being found culpable to some extent. What no previous account has revealed, however, is the fact that there was an organized conspiracy afoot in Athens, involving the Greek Premier on one side, and the King and a serving British Rear-Admiral on the other, to facilitate the escape of the Germans ships. In addition to being the most complete account yet published of the dramatic escape, Superior Force reveals for the first time the extent of the Athens conspiracy and the ambivalent role played by Mark Kerr who, soon after, would also remove any chance of Greek co-operation in the major offensive planned by Churchill against the Turks at the Dardanelles. Few men can genuinely be said to have changed history; by his actions in Athens in the summer of 1914 Mark Kerr is one of those few.
